The Best Christmas Cookie Recipes

One of my favorite Christmas time memories growing up was when my twin sister and I would spend the day with my Grandma baking Christmas cookies. Her table would be full of trays of a variety of cookies, fudge, and candy to serve on Christmas Eve with homemade ice cream.

I always admired my Grandma’s baking skills. She had many recipes memorized and could make some without even having to measure out the ingredients. When we would go to her house for a Sunday visit she would always have pie or treats on her kitchen counter ready for her Sunday visitors to enjoy. Thinking about it gives me a feeling of nostalgia!

Today my mom, sisters and I get together a week or two before Christmas and bake our favorite Christmas cookie recipes. Some new, and some of our favorite recipes from our grandma. We play Christmas music and enjoy a day of baking, and spending time together. After Christmas every year we always have leftover cookies to disperse between us and say: “next year we shouldn’t make so many cookies,” but when it comes time to write the list of what we are making again we can’t go without our favorites! We only make these cookie recipes once a year! I am going to share three of my favorite cookie recipes that we make every year!

Shortbread cookies are my absolute favorite Christmas cookie. They are soft, buttery, not too sweet, and the perfect bite size cookie. This is my grandma’s recipe. It uses a LOT of butter, but you can easily half this recipe.

Cut out sugar cookies are the classic Christmas cookie! Here is the cookie recipe we use. The kids love to help decorate them, which usually results in sprinkles everywhere! We use buttercream frosting for them which in my opinion is so much better than typical royal icing. I used this buttercream recipe when I had a cupcake business, and it is SO good!

Sweet surprises, or peanut butter truffles are one of my family’s favorites! The creamy peanut butter filling is delicious! We also love making oreo truffles and are going to try gingerbread truffles this year! This is a super easy recipe and can be kept in the freezer for up to three months.
