Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Staple Pieces for Countless Outfit Options
When the season changes it can feel oh so tempting to fill your closet with all the upcoming trends. The familiar feeling of having “nothing to wear” comes back when your summer wardrobe is no longer adequate for the cooler temps. Instead of shopping for what’s trending, consider creating a capsule wardrobe first. Trends can always be added to your closet later. By creating a capsule wardrobe you will never feel like you have nothing to wear.
A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of clothes that can be easily mixed and matched. This helps create multiple outfit options with minimal pieces. Your capsule can be customized to fit your personal style. A capsule wardrobe typically includes classic pieces that never go out of style and neutral colors.
I have built a 24 piece capsule. The capsule consists of endless outfit options. The good news? Most of these pieces are probably already in your closet. Firstly, to create your own capsule start by shopping your closet. Your capsule does not need to include these exact pieces. Feel free to customize to your liking! For instance, if you don’t like leather leggings you can substitute black instead! If bodysuits aren’t your thing replace them with your other favorite layering pieces.
Creating a capsule will save you time and money. Whether you work from home, out of the home, or are a stay at home mom this capsule is going to provide endless outfit options throughout the fall season!
Fall Capsule Pieces
Coatigan // Cardigan // Utility Jacket // Jean Jacket // Shacket // Black Sweater // Neutral Sweater // Striped Sweater // White Tee // Graphic Tee // White Button Down // White Bodysuit // Black Bodysuit // Half Zip Sweatshirt // Black Jeans // Light Wash Jeans // Destructed Jeans // Leopard Skirt // Leather Leggings // Neutral Leggings // Sneakers // Mules // Neutral Booties // Chelsea Boots
Outer Layers
I chose five outer layers for this capsule. Each of these pieces are curated to pair with the other tops in the capsule.
The shacket is more of a trendy piece, but the neutral color I chose helps to make it more of a classic piece as well as increases the number of outfit options. If you prefer a plaid shacket and it pairs well with the other tops in your wardrobe feel free to switch it out!
The cardigan is my favorite layering piece! I definitely have more than one cardigan in my closet, but I chose one to specifically wear with the items in the capsule. I again chose a very neutral color for this piece but love the texture and button detail of this specific cardigan. When choosing the cardigan for your capsule think about what style you would be most likely to wear.
I have had a utility jacket in my closet for years and don’t see this classic piece going out of style any time soon. I love the olive color and find myself reaching for it often on chilly fall days. The quality of this Madewell jacket is made to last but if you are looking for a budget friendly option Target as well as many other retailers always carry utility jackets in the fall.
The jean jacket is a closet staple and the one I recommend having in your closet the most of these outer layers. It can be worn all year and is so versatile. I have had this jean jacket for 5 years and the quality is still great.
The coatigan has been on my wish list for a couple years. I see many influencers wearing and styling it in multiple ways. It was on sale earlier this month, so I finally made the purchase. I am excited to style it with other pieces in the capsule! This is an investment piece, but it is both classic and versatile making it worth it.
Tops
I chose nine tops to include in the capsule wardrobe. These tops are all very versatile, and that is what makes them great pieces for a capsule. If any of the tops I chose are not something you would wear feel free to customize accordingly! This is your capsule so be sure to chose pieces you will look forward to wearing.
I included three sweaters in the capsule. The three colors I picked are black, black and white stripe, and ivory. Feel free to chose any neutral color combo! The sweaters I chose are lightweight enough that they can be layered under one of the outer layers. If you want to be able to layer them keep that in mind when choosing the sweaters for your capsule.
Basic tees are essential pieces in a capsule wardrobe. I chose a graphic that pairs well under any of the outer layers, and a quality basic white tee.
I love a classic white button down, and this one is great quality and has a great fit. The white button down could always be switched to a chambray or any style of button down.
These bodysuits are great on their own, but also make the perfect layering piece. I chose black and white because they can be layered under anything in your closet. This bodysuit is one of my favorite pieces in my closet.
A sweatshirt is a must for the days we feel like dressing casually. I chose this quarter zip in the perfect neutral color, but a crew neck or hoodie would also be good options.
Bottoms
I chose six bottoms for the capsule. Three of the six are jeans. I am all about a good pair of jeans, but you might not feel the same love for them. If you prefer to wear a different style of pants or work in an office setting you might want to replace some of the jeans.
I chose a leopard skirt because it is a fun piece but also very versatile. The leather leggings are a perfect fall bottom but can be replaced with classic black leggings. The last bottom I chose is a neutral pair of leggings for a casual bottom and to mix things up instead of only having denim or black as options.
Shoes
The capsule wardrobe includes four pairs of shoes. A sneaker, a mule, booties and chelsea boots. Choose shoes for your capsule that you typically wear or already own.
Sneakers have been the pair of shoes I reach for most lately and don’t see that changing anytime soon. The pair included in the capsule have some neutral colors on them but a plain white pair would be a great choice as well.
I have had a very similar pair of mules to the one I chose for the capsule for a couple years and love them. The cognac color makes them so versatile, and they are easy to slip on and go.
The taupe color booties will easily pair with the outfits you create. These boots are comfortable and have a perfect heel height.
Cheslea boots are having a moment right now. If they have chunky sole, even better. The capsule needed one black pair of shoes, and I thought this classic boot was perfect.
One Weeks of Capsule Outfits
I created one week of outfit inspiration. I hope you can refer back to these when you are in need of outfit ideas. The number of outfit options with these pieces go way behind one week.
